What Is a Stock Screener?

A stock screener is a tool that allows investors to filter stocks based on specific financial criteria. Instead of manually researching thousands of companies, a screener helps you narrow down the universe of stocks to those that match your investment criteria.

Key Metrics Used in Stock Screening

📊 P/E Ratio (Price-to-Earnings)

Measures how much investors pay per dollar of earnings. A lower P/E may indicate an undervalued stock, while a higher P/E suggests growth expectations. Best used when comparing companies within the same industry.

📊 P/B Ratio (Price-to-Book)

Compares a company’s market value to its book value. A P/B below 1.0 may indicate the stock is trading below its asset value — potentially interesting for value investors.

📊 ROE (Return on Equity)

Measures how efficiently a company uses shareholder equity to generate profit. A higher ROE generally indicates better management efficiency.

📊 Dividend Yield

The annual dividend payment expressed as a percentage of the stock price. Useful for income-focused investors looking for regular cash flow.

📊 Market Capitalization

The total market value of a company’s outstanding shares. Stocks are typically classified as large-cap (>$10B), mid-cap ($2B–$10B), or small-cap (<$2B).

Popular Stock Screening Strategies

  • Value Screening: Low P/E + Low P/B ratios
  • Quality Screening: High ROE + Low debt
  • Income Screening: High dividend yield + stable earnings
  • Growth Screening: Revenue growth + earnings growth rate
  • Large Cap Stability: High market cap + consistent profitability
